Coastal archaeology adds to Scotland’s story
After three years of fieldwork and detecting, Wessex Archaeology’s SAMPHIRE project report has revealed the rich heritage of Scotland’s coastal communities.
With £100,000 funding from our predecessor The Crown Estate, the research project has provided a fascinating insight into history told through marine wreckage and artefacts.
A crucial part of the project was gathering memories and information from communities and sailors the length of Scotland’s west coast.
The researchers identified and mapped previously unknown shipwrecks and artefacts that add significantly to the record of Scotland’s age-old relationship with the sea.
